How To Look After Your Invisalign Braces

Invisalign is a long-standing way of treating spacing and alignment concerns with the smile, and it’s been used – to great success – to correct the teeth of millions around the world. While many of our patients have heard of Invisalign braces, and may even know a little about how treatment works, not many understand how to care for them. So, today our dentists serving Ripon will shed some light on how to look after your Invisalign braces, so everyone gets the best out of their treatment.

1. Don’t eat while wearing your Invisalign aligners

The biggest no-no as far as Invisalign braces are concerned is to eat while they’re still in your mouth. These clear acrylic aligners just aren’t designed to withstand biting and chewing forces, which means they could crack, break or split while you’re wearing them and cause untold damage to your mouth (as well as delays to your treatment if you then need to organise a replacement). Chewing gum also counts here, because not only could this damage them, but it could also get stuck in the pits and grooves of the aligners, causing problems (and appearing unsightly!).

This isn’t down to any forces involved, but merely about your aligners being clear by design. Anything you drink – other than clear water – has the potential to stain or discolour your Invisalign braces. That’s exactly why we recommend avoiding this. Of course, this also goes for any food you eat, too – and is one more reason to remove them when you’re snacking or having a meal.

3. Store your braces when you take them out

A storage case for your clear braces is an absolute must. Without one, you could damage them by accident or even misplace them altogether. We’d suggest Invisalign’s specially-designed storage cases, as these won’t rattle your aligner around too much (especially when compared to things like Tupperware). It’s all to help keep your braces in great condition – and your treatment on track!

And there you have it – that’s really all there is to it! It’s actually remarkably simple to look after your Invisalign braces – as well as keeping up with your Invisalign treatment programme and looking after your mouth, teeth, and gums at the same time.
