Why Early Oral Health Education Matters: Our Recent School Visits
At Boroughbride Dental Centre, we believe every child deserves the knowledge and support they need to develop healthy habits for life. As a children’s NHS dentist, we regularly visit local schools and community groups to help young people understand the importance of looking after their teeth and gums from an early age.
Over recent weeks, our team has enjoyed visiting Boroughbridge Primary School, Holy Trinity School in Ripon, and Stepping Stones in Ripon. These visits gave us the opportunity to speak directly with children about oral health in a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate way.
Building Healthy Habits Early
Good oral health starts long before a child visits the dentist independently. The habits children learn during their early years often stay with them throughout their lives.
During our school visits, we discussed:
- How to brush teeth effectively
- Why brushing twice a day is important
- The role fluoride plays in protecting teeth
- Healthy food and drink choices for strong teeth and gums
- The effects of sugary snacks and drinks on dental health
- The importance of regular dental check-ups
By helping children understand the reasons behind these habits, we can encourage positive choices both at home and at school.

Preventing Problems Before They Start
Tooth decay remains one of the most common health problems affecting children in the UK. However, many cases can be prevented through good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular visits to a children’s NHS dentist.
Education plays a vital role in prevention. When children understand how their daily choices affect their teeth, they gain the confidence to take ownership of their oral health.
We love seeing children ask questions, share their experiences, and get involved in discussions about keeping their smiles healthy.

Working Together with Schools and Parents
Schools play an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles, and we are always delighted to support local teachers, pupils, and families through our educational visits.
By working together, we can help children establish positive oral health routines that support their wellbeing for years to come.
We would like to thank the staff and pupils at Boroughbridge Primary School, Holy Trinity School, and Stepping Stones for making us feel so welcome during our visits.
